How to read TIPS yields
A TIPS real yield is what the bond pays on top of inflation: the principal is adjusted with CPI-U and the coupon is paid on the adjusted principal. The breakeven inflation rate is the nominal Treasury yield of the same maturity minus the real yield — roughly the average inflation at which a TIPS and a regular Treasury would return the same. Treasury publishes these par real yields each business day for the 5-, 7-, 10-, 20- and 30-year points.
